The 3 New IT Security Challenges Facing NZ Businesses: Are You Prepared?

It doesn’t seem that long ago that IT was merely a support function, one small cog in a much larger business wheel. Computers, mostly desktops, were used for specific tasks, such as customer records and billing, and downtime was just a part of workplace life. Times, of course, have changed beyond recognition, and without changing the way devices are managed and protected, these three key security challenges could represent the biggest risk facing your organisation:

1. Privacy legislation. Like jurisdictions such as the European Union, Australia, Singapore and the US, New Zealand is set to introduce updated data protection legislation for the digital era. The Privacy Bill passed its second reading in parliament in June and is expected to replace the Privacy Act 1993 early in 2020. Again, a three-pronged approach that incorporates process, education and technology is recommended. 2. Devices, devices, and more devices. Like it or not, personal devices are big in the workplace – and while there are productivity advantages to this scenario, there are also new security considerations.

3. Everyone is a target. It may be only the high-profile business breaches making headlines, but the proliferation of both opportunistic and targeted attacks leaves nobody out. In the last year alone, cyber-attacks have risen significantly, with the number of small and mid-sized organisations experiencing a cyber-attack or data breach increasing from 55 percent to 61 percent[1]. Phishing attacks and social engineering are the most common paths in. Cyber-crime is big business, and as attacks become more sophisticated, they require a new approach that includes both enterprise-level security and well-designed processes. User education is key, and introducing a cyber-safe culture pays off.
